A REMAND prisoner “desperate” to not go back to jail started a punch-up on a police air wing flight and later seriously injured himself after leaping from a paddy wagon at 80km/h.

Patrick Cumaiyi yesterday pleaded guilty in the NT Supreme Court to endangering the safety of an aircraft, as well as property damage and escaping lawful custody charges stemming from his leap-to-freedom gone awry.

Supreme Court Justice Judith Kelly said the circumstances of the aircraft charge were unusual.

She said people charged with endangering an aircraft had often committed “essentially a nuisance offence on large aircraft”, sometimes while drunk and “fiddling with exit doors that they couldn’t possibly open”.

“This was a tiny little aircraft and he was struggling, kicking and attempting to bite two officers ... a matter of feet from where the pilots were ...”

The court heard the nine-seater plane was moving down the runway at Wadeye, at full throttle, when another prisoner started unclipping his seatbelt.

Cumaiyi then unbuckled his seatbelt and said to a distracted police officer, Constable Andrew Bravos: “You want to fight me Andrew? F*ck you.”

Despite being in restraints, Cumaiyi tried to throw punches at Constable Bravos and ignored commands to sit down.
Constable Bravos delivered a series of lawful punches – which police call “closed fist clearance strikes” – to Cumaiyi’s head and ribs, as he thrashed around, resisting the two officers on board while the plane taxied down the runway.

The pilot abandoned the take off and Cumaiyi was sent back to the watchhouse to instead be driven to Darwin down what defence lawyer Marty Aust described as the “dusty, corrugated” Port Keats Rd.

Cumaiyi’s 80km/h escape from the paddy wagon, after kicking the roof off, was short lived and a trailing paddy wagon spotted Cumaiyi on the side of the road.

Mr Aust said the property damage charge was limited to “a few pop rivets”. “He broke facial bones, or at least a facial bone,” he said. “Rather than being petulant, this is just a desperate ... response to being once again in chains.”

Justice Kelly will sentence Cumaiyi on Monday.

Port Keats/Wadeye is one of the worst and violent areas in Australia. The Abos never grow up, just behave like an 11 year old through out life!

A GANG of youths has gone on a terrifying rampage in the southern suburbs, savagely attacking residents with a garden stake, damaging cars and throwing rocks at vehicles on the Southern Expressway.

Witnesses have told how the group relentlessly beat a couple, leaving one victim “covered in blood from head to toe”.

Shortly afterwards the gang threw rocks at cars from a footbridge over the Southern Expressway before they assaulted a wheelchair-bound woman and a man, both in their 60s, at their home.

The first incident occurred just after 11.45pm on Saturday with police receiving reports of a fight in Columba St, Morphett Vale.

Police say a male motorist had been driving along the street when rocks were thrown at his car.

When he stopped and approached the youths, believed to be four boys and a girl, they assaulted him and damaged his car using sticks and rocks.

Andrew Craigie, 60, was at home when the youth walked past his house and “gave me a mouthful”.

Mr Craigie said the group moved on but shortly after he heard an altercation.

“A ... car went past and (the driver’s) yelling and screaming at them so I don’t know what they’ve done to him,” he said.

Mr Craigie said the motorist told him the youths had thrown rocks at his car.

He said the group turned on the driver further up the street.

“It just got out of hand,” Mr Craigie said.

“(One of the youths) was trying to smash a window, trying to get (the driver) out and the girlfriend is going off.

“He just drove through the whole crowd and knocked one over.”

The suspects are described as being of Aboriginal appearance.

A MAN*Boong*has been arrested and charged in relation to a serious sexual assault of a woman in the Northern Territory.

The man, 31, got out of the vehicle and allegedly began physically assaulting the woman.

“The woman fell to the ground and the man has strangled her to the point of unconsciousness,” Police allege.

ARMED robbers have assaulted a staff member and good Samaritan at a service station in Nightcliff in a brazen smash and grab on Wednesday.

The robbers fled the scene following the burglary at 6am and three men are currently assisting police with their inquiries.

A local man who didn’t want to be named said the incident was the latest in a series of thefts from the same servo in an area where crime was at its worst in a decade.

The man said he had seen children as young as 10 stealing from the Shell earlier this week and staff had told him they felt “helpless to do anything about it”.

“He said ‘I talk to the cops, the cops they don’t bother, I can’t grab them because if I touch someone I’ll lose my job’ so they basically just have to stand there and watch people come and take .

A MOTHER whose son was brutally bashed by a gang of youths on Main South Rd has called on other parents and community leaders to attend an urgent meeting to curb violence in the area

Ms Farrell said there needed to be different ways to educate children, which also included Aboriginal elders working with young people.

“These kids, and it has been proven time and time again, have no respect for the uniform,” she said.

“We need to come in at different angles and get the respect, and that has to be from the elders.”

Mr Stevens said police were aware of the parties that occur in the area, but were not sure if they were “prevalent” enough to raise public concern.

The meeting is at Neporendi Aboriginal Forum, 7 Vine St, Old Reynella, on Thursday, April 5, from 7pm-8.30pm.

Now! Wouldn't that be interesting to visit? What are we going to do with the Coons who are a bloody protected species?!

SA POLICE have organised a meeting to address growing community concerns about a spate of crime and unsafe parties — where youth congregate then spill on to the streets when they are shut down — in Adelaide’s south.

It comes despite Police Commissioner Grant Stevens last week telling the Southern Times Messenger these parties were not “prevalent” enough to raise the public concern.

“I wouldn’t suggest there are any trends that (show) we have an epidemic of out of control parties,” Mr Stevens said.

The meeting is at Port Noarlunga Arts Centre, Gawler St, Port Noarlunga, on Monday, April 16, 6.30pm-9pm.

It follows local residents’ concerns about youth gang violence — where innocent people have been assaulted on the streets — after these parties have been shut down.

Aboriginal elders needed to educate offenders to get the message across.

“These kids, and it has been proven time and time again, have no respect for the uniform,” Ms Farrell said.

“We need to come in at different angles and get the respect, and that has to be from the elders … I know they are furious.

“Crime is getting worse and worse because (gangs) are getting bigger and bigger.

“People are scared even locking themselves in their homes, things are getting damaged and people are getting hurt.

“This is all about fixing the issue with a bunch of drunken youth that have gotten the neighbourhood scared — so let’s change this.”

Council of Aboriginal Elders of SA executive officer Garth Dodd said his members needed to work with young offenders to “keep the streets safe”.

Mr Dodd, who said it was important not to stereotype all Aboriginal youth as criminals, said elders had to work cooperatively with concerned residents, youth and community leaders.

“We need to get the elders in to talk to these families, ask them what is needed here — how can they help in any way possible,” Mr Dodd said.

It sure would be an interesting one to attend if anybody wants to venture down to this meeting.
Ahhh... the fruits of having the Abos as a "protected species"?!

MORE than 150 concerned locals packed out Port Noarlunga’s Arts Centre to help find ways to put an end to the escalating violence in Adelaide’s south.

The people - who say they feel like prisoners in their own home and fear using some roads - attended the Police and Community Engagement forum last night, addressing issues including out-of-control parties, youth violence, the state’s ice problem, re-engaging youth and rock throwing on the Southern Expressway.

Among the community’s concerns were underage drinking and youth congregating at parties then spilling on to the streets when they are shut down.

At least two people walked out of the forum, one woman who left saying she had “no faith in the justice system”.

The forum came after Port Noarlunga mother Nanette Farrell – whose son was brutally bashed by a gang of youths – called an urgent meeting to curb violence following a spate of incidents in the area.

Local MPs, Ms Farrell, as well as representatives from the Sammy D Foundation, Onkaparinga Council and Aboriginal elders all attended the event.

Neil Davis, from the Sammy D Foundation, said it was time to make a change.

“We are not going to change this overnight,” Mr Davis said.

“We need educate the kids of today so they can educate their youth as well.

“It is about us working together to come up with answers to our problems.”

So the Abo elders want their kids educated?they aren't exactly model parents! This current crop gets knocked up for a government funded baby bonus! Just what we need when we have Prison at 100% capacity and no funds to make more!
WTF must we do to further educate these cavemen
      ?

A TAXI driver has been held up by two men – with one allegedly wielding a broken glass bottle.

The taxi driver, 46, was parked on the inbound side of Bagot Rd near the footbridge at 11.45pm last night when he was attacked.

The two men approached the vehicle and opened the driver and passenger doors.

Police allege one of the males was armed with a broken bottle and threatened the victim while demanding money.

The victim handed over a sum of cash and the offenders fled on foot.

The first offender is described as an indigenous male in his mid-20s with wavy dark hair trimmed around the ears and a thin moustache.
